Kiawah is a private, gated community in Charleston County, about 25 miles southwest of the city. Visitors get a pass at the security gate on Kiawah Island Parkway, where it meets Beachwalker Drive, so plan trips with a puppy accordingly and bring everything the crate and car need. The island is low, about seven feet above sea level, and the full-time population rises sharply with visitors, which means a puppy meets many strangers and rental homes.
About thirty miles of paved trails crisscross the island, shared by bikes, runners and walkers. For a puppy, bicycles are the main puzzle. Start at a quiet driveway and reward your puppy for looking at passing riders and then looking back at you. Keep the leash short at path edges, stay to the side and move to cooler hours, because paved surfaces hold heat well into the afternoon. Reward your puppy for walking beside you on the grass edge while bikes pass.
Beachwalker County Park at the island's west end is run by the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission. Its rules page says pets must be leashed, cleaned up after and under control, and it notes that a town ordinance sets seasonal leash rules for the beach. Because those seasons can change, read the current posted rules before going, and ask your vet when your puppy is ready for crowded public places. Pack a towel and water for the ride home, since salt and sand can irritate young skin.
Seasonal crowds and rental guests make greetings tricky. Teach your puppy to sit for attention, and ask visitors to wait until all four paws are on the ground, which prevents a habit of jumping that is hard to undo. If you are staying a few weeks, keep the crate and routine the same as at home. For hands-on help, private lessons often fit short stays. General estimates run about $75 to $150 each, and prices vary by trainer and market.
